ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take at least four months to achieve, involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have just seven days to totally rebuild an entire house plus the exterior and landscaping. The lives of the lucky families are forever changed when they learn that they have been selected to have their home remodeled or rebuilt.

Bruce and Paulita Lewis took advantage of low interest rates to take out a loan to improve their 52 year-old home. Heavy winter rains caused the home's unfinished roof to collapse and destroy the family's possessions. The Lewis' contractor, who had been recommended by a friend, abandoned the project with $44,000 of their money. Amidst this turmoil, and while the couple and their two kids shared a spare bedroom in a relative's apartment, Paulita discovered a lump in her neck and was diagnosed with Stage IV Thymatic Carcinoma, a rare form of cancer.

As Paulita said, "It is hard to recover when you're sleeping in a twin bed at your in-laws and your husband and children are sleeping on the floor next to you." While the Lewis' struggled under financial strains from medical expenses, their friends and neighbors rallied to help them. Bruce is a well-known, well-respected police officer in El Segundo, and the community was eager to help this man and his family.

JZMK Partners joined Taylor Woodrow, the Extreme Makeover design team, and hundreds of volunteers in designing and rebuilding this special family's home, giving this mom the peace of mind that only a home can provide, so that she has a greater chance at recovery.
