OLIVER RESIDENCE

This home was designed for a mature family as a seasonal beachfront vacation home. It is located on the fabled North Shore of the island of Oahu. The home is sited and oriented to take advantage of breathtaking views of the world class surf breaks of the Sunset Beach area, while turning its back toward the strong offshore breezes, thus mitigating their impact upon outdoor comfort. Those same breezes allow the home to be naturally cooled by custom andiroba wood double hung windows on all sides of the buildings.

The heavy annual rainfall amounts are a driver of the building form. Broad overhangs shelter the outdoor seating areas from the wind, rain, and sun, while providing these areas access to the expansive views. A 40 foot set of custom sliding hardwood pocket doors are centered upon the entry to the home opening the living areas to a large outdoor Lanai, erasing the line between indoor and outdoor living space. Kitchen, Dining, Living Rooms and all bedrooms are oriented toward the ocean view and all have exterior lanais.

The style of the home was the result of an extensive study of the best examples of the plantation style of architecture throughout the islands. Interior and exterior finishes are finely detailed examples of this authentic historical Hawaiian style. The home has all the latest smart home technology, while minimizing energy use through passive cooling design.
