Andrew Watkins is an architect and urban designer specializing in large-scale master planning, urban design, and resilient community development. With more than 25 years of experience leading large-scale planning and urban design initiatives across the United States and internationally. Licensed in California and Massachusetts, Andrew specializes in projects that integrate urbanism, ecology, and long-term community growth.
As Partner and President of JZMK Partners, Andrew leads large-scale urban design, master planning, and new city initiatives. His work spans the United States, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Iraq, Indonesia, China, India, South Africa, Botswana, Ethiopia, Germany, Italy, Armenia, and Mexico. Andrew’s design approach emphasizes placemaking, resilient communities, and the creation of high-quality public realms. His experience includes both urban and suburban revitalization projects as well as greenfield master-planned communities. He has a particular interest in the intersection of design and human well-being, focusing on ecological systems that shape everyday life — including food, mobility, water, shelter, and waste. His research explores how infrastructure, urban systems, and grassroots organization influence community resilience in both developed and emerging economies.
Andrew’s published research includes work on mobility-oriented development in Orange County, integrated food systems, resilient design strategies in Northern Colorado, social impact design methodologies, urban transformation in Eastern Germany, and the role of tall buildings in connected city systems. His writing has appeared in Places, 306090, Inmobiliare, and Architecture Plus. Andrew is a Full Member of the Urban Land Institute and serves as Chair of the Residential Neighborhood Development Council and as part of the Health Leaders Network. Locally, he contributes to the Resilient Communities Council. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
